Gnarlwood Terrain Special Rules
The Gnarlwood is full of deadly hazards and treacherous terrain. To fight in such a harsh environment, warriors must adapt, scaling creaking wooden platforms to avoid the dangers on the forest floor, or stalking their prey amidst the ominous shadows of crumbling ruins.
This section includes detailed pictures of each of the Gnarlwood terrain features and labels which parts of them correspond to which terrain types as outlined here. In addition, if you are using a terrain map with the Gnarlwood runemark, there are special rules for the watchtower and the rope bridges. If you are using the alternative terrain rules, you can agree with your opponent if you wish to use these special rules.
Rope Bridges
Rope bridges are platforms.
Special Rules
Objectives, Treasure and Tokens: Objective markers, treasure tokens and all other tokens (such as ash bomb tokens) cannot be placed on rope bridges.
Cutting the Ropes: A fighter that is within 1" of a rope bridge but not on it can attempt to destroy it as an action. If they do so, roll 3 dice and add 1 to the score of each roll if the fighter is a monster or has any melee weapons with a Strength characteristic 5 or greater. If 1 roll scores 6+, the rope bridge is damaged. If 2 or more rolls score 6+, the rope bridge is destroyed.
The first time a rope bridge is damaged, it is weakened. This has no immediate effect, but players should be wary of sending their fighters across it from that point on. The second time a rope bridge is damaged, it is destroyed.
When a rope bridge is destroyed, every fighter that has the centre of their base on that rope bridge falls one after the other, in an order chosen by the player whose turn is taking place. When a fighter falls, if there is nowhere vertically lower that they can be placed, they are taken down. Otherwise, when a fighter falls in this manner, roll 3 dice for impact damage instead of 1. Once each fighter on the rope bridge has fallen, the rope bridge is removed.
Alternative Terrain Rules
lf you are using terrain cards, all rope bridges are positioned so that fighters can stand on them without falling off. If you are using the Alternative Terrain rules from the Core Book, there might be rope bridges on the battlefield that are too steeply angled for a fighter to be placed upon them. In these cases, we recommended the players agree to use the ladder rules for that rope bridge rather than the platform rules.
Gnarloaks
The trunk of a gnarloak is an obstacle, as are any large skulls or support struts. The wooden platform is a platform. Lastly, the upper branches are unscalable.
Rib Platform
The trunk of the gnarloak is an obstacle, as are the skull and support struts. The wooden platform is a platform. The ribcage is deadly terrain and an obstacle. Lastly, the upper branches are unscalable.
Ribcages
Ribcages are deadly terrain and obstacles.
Ruins, Palisade And Shattered Post
The Ruins, Palisade and Shattered Post are all obstacles. Parts less than 1" high vertically are low terrain.
Designer's Note: The fastest way for a fighter to scale an obstacle such as a ruin is to climb one side and then jump down from the top.
Watchtower
Source: Heart of Ghur / Rot & Ruin (out of print)
The trunk and large skull of the watchtower are obstacles. There is a platform at the rear.
Special Rule
The Watchtower's War-horn: If a fighter is within 1" of the watchtower's war-horn (see picture), they can use the ability below to call in reserves to the battle.
[Triple] Sound the Alarm: A fighter can use this ability only if they are within l" of the watchtower's war-horn. Roll a number of dice equal to the value of this ability. For each 4+, you can pick 1 fighter from your warband that is in reserve and set them up on the battlefield within 3" horizontally of their deployment point as normal. These fighters can be activated this battle round as normal.
Hollow Refuge

The bone walls and bamboo poles are obstacles. The bonestrewn floor and bamboo floors are platforms. The canopies are unscalable terrain.
Special Rule
Safe Haven: A fighter on the bone-strewn floor or lowest bamboo floor can make the 'Take Cover' reaction without forfeiting one of their actions in that battle round.
Primal Fortifications

Fortified Gnarloak
The palisade walls are obstacles. If an enemy fighter is on the wooden platform, the palisade walls are also deadly terrain. The trunk of the gnarloak is an obstacle, as are any large skulls and support struts. The wooden platform is a platform. The upper branches are unscalable. Lastly, the ladders are ladders. If you are using the fortification rules, do not set the ladders up during the terrain step.
Fortified Platform
The palisade walls are obstacles. If an enemy fighter is on the wooden platform, the palisade walls are also deadly terrain. The vertebrae are obstacles, as are other bones or support struts.
Special Rules
Makeshift Missiles: A fighter, other than a fighter with the Beast () runemark, on the wooden platform can use the ability below to deter attackers:
[Double] Makeshift Missiles: Roll a number of dice equal to the value of this ability. For each roll of 5+, pick a visible enemy fighter within 8" of this fighter. Allocate D3 damage points to that fighter.
Realmshaper Engine
Source: Nightmare Quest / Might & Madness (out of print)
The walls of a Realmshaper Engine are obstacles. If a fighter is on the stairs or walls of a Realmshaper Engine when their activation ends, they fall.
The top of a Realmshaper Engine is a platform.
Perilous Platform
Fighters on the highest platform of a Realmshaper Engine that have a falling test made for them fall on a roll of 1-3 instead of a 1.
The Power Of Creation
If there is only one fighter on the highest platform of a Realmshaper Engine, that fighter can use the following ability:
[Triple] Power Unleashed: Pick a terrain feature Visible to this fighter. Allocate D6 damage points to each fighter within 1" of that terrain feature. Then allocate D6 damage points to this fighter. If this fighter has the Seraphon () or Hunters of Huanchi () runemark, allocate D3 damage points to this fighter instead. If this fighter has the Seraphon () or Hunters of Huanchi () runemark and the Priest () or Mystic () runemark, do not allocate damage points to this fighter.
Mawpit
Source: Hunter and Hunted (out of print)
Any fighter that winds up in the Mawpit's mouth – whether dragged in by a harpoon or knocked off the platform by an ornery Fomoroid – is taken down, no questions asked. What's more, whenever someone makes a melee attack against an opponent with fewer wounds, they can spend a [Triple] to attempt to aggressively persuade their victim to Get in the Pit.
[Triple] Get in the Pit: After the next melee attack action made by this fighter in this activation that targets a fighter with a lower Wounds characteristic that is on the skull platform or within 1" horizontally of the maw, roll a dice and add the Strength characteristic of that attack action to the result. If the result is 8+, the target is taken down.
